Vacation opening

Library opening times between the end of term and the beginning of the holiday closures will be as follows this year:

On Monday and Tuesday we will open from 9 am to 5 pm. On Wednesday we will open at 9 am, but will close along with the rest of the College site at 1 pm.

Both the library and the College site at Chester will then remain closed until the morning of Tuesday 3rd January 2012, when normal opening times will resume.

We hope you found the library a useful help for your research this term: please have a wonderful vacation and we look forward to seeing you all again in 2012.

Borrowing books over the vacation period

As the vacation period approaches fast, you may want to borrow books over the holiday period.

7 day books that are borrowed any time this week or next will not be due back until Tuesday 3rd January 2012, which is the first day of the new term.

Standard 3 day books that are borrowed from tomorrow (Wed 14th Dec) onwards will also not be due back until 3rd January.

If you are interested in a book which someone currently has on loan, we’d strongly recommend you to reserve it, to prevent it going out until January. Library staff can help you to place a reservation if you’re not sure how to do this.

Please be aware that loans across the vacation are only made to students who do NOT have outstanding library fees on their accounts.

Borrowing during consolidation week

Because you are less likely to be visiting the centre during consolidation week (Monday 24 October to Friday 28 October), any books borrowed from now on will not be due back until Monday 31 October, which is the day that normal classes resume.

Monday’s PLC sessions cancelled

Unfortunately only 1 person signed up for the PLC sessions on Monday, so we have had to cancel it.

Library opening hours this weekend (15-16 October)

We are open until 6 pm on Friday evening.

On both Saturday and Sunday this weekend, we are open from 12 noon until 6 pm.

Voluntary research sessions in the library

Now that the external sessions are finished, we are starting a series of voluntary sessions in the library, in which we will offer you guidance on how to conduct legal research.

There are three sessions: one on how to do paper-based research, a second on how to research caselaw using the online databases and a third on how to research legislation using the online databases. Each session lasts approximately 45 minutes and takes place in the library block: the paper sessions in the main library downstairs and the online sessions in the upstairs computer rooms. The sessions will all be led by David Battersby.

The first sessions begin on Tuesday (18th Oct) as follows:

12 noon Paper-based

1 pm Online caselaw

3 pm Online legislation

They will then continue:

Friday 21st

12 noon Online caselaw

1 pm Online legislation

3 pm Paper-based

Monday 31st

12 noon Online legislation

1 pm Paper-based

3 pm Online caselaw

It may be possible to arrange other times that are more convenient for you: please contact David, if possible as groups.

These sessions are useful for both LPC and GDL students: LPC please note that we will be showing you only search techniques: we are of course unable to help with your PLR research.

If you’d like to sign up for a session, sign up sheets will be appearing later this morning (Friday) in the library.

Special note to part time, evening and weekend students: special sessions at times more convenient for you will be arranged in due course, in consultation with your tutors- please watch this space!

Weslaw/Lawtel session: Monday 10th October

Unfortunately, only three people expressed an interest in the sessions to be held today. Since we can’t really justify brining a trainer all the way from London for such a small number, I am sorry to have to tell you the sessions have been cancelled. This does not affect tomorrow’s Justis sessions.

There are some alternative methods of finding out about these databases:

Lizzie Rowan is the Westlaw/Lawtel student associate at Chester and holds clinic sessions when she can answer your questions on a regular basis each week. Check the signs around the College to find out when and where the clinics take place.

Starting at the end of this week, David Battersby the Information Officer will begin some voluntary sessions in the library block covering both paper and electronic research (the latter to include Westlaw). Please watch the blog for more information.

A user guide is published for both Lawtel and Westlaw and free copies are available from the library.

Both databases include comprehensive online help facilities.

You can ask at any time at the library desk.
